To Drive or Not to Drive? – That is the question!

To Drive or Not to Drive? – That is the question!

In The UK, planners have recently issued a report to assist with infrastructure planning, suggesting that there will be far more cars on the roads of Western Europe in the next 20 years. At the same time, a group of academics produced a completely conflicting report, suggesting that city dwellers will increasingly go for more efficient transport schemes when they need to move greater distances, rather than personal car ownership. This along with ‘driver less’ technologies, new energy initiatives and alternative high speed transport, would suggest, they argue, that car numbers will actually fall in the next 20 years. Who is correct?
Using Intuition, one can say that actually it is a basic human reaction that will make car numbers fall in the next 20 years, in the already developed world. Where the sense of freedom is denied, the freedom to drive on the open road, because there will be few ‘open’ roads remaining, people will actually opt not to drive, because there is no pleasure in driving in traffic jams! Therefore increasingly, city dwellers (the majority of people now live in cities) will not buy a car. However, car sharing schemes will become popular, particularly within family groups.
Car numbers will actually fall overall, as a result.
