The 80′s Are Back!

The 80′s Are Back!

It’s official. I read it in the news. The ‘80s are back! We’re not talking wide shoulder pads or coke-fuelled electronic disco music. But oh joy, curly hair! And not just curly hair but the full big-fat-curly-frizz! Kylie’s been spotted with a curly perm and it’s the style striding down the catwalk. I am at last, at least in trichological terms, en-vogue. I don’t know of any clinical trials on the subject but am certain of the deep not incredibly complex connection between the state of one’s hair and actual physical and mental wellbeing.

Call me shallow, but having spent most of my life looking like I’ve just been pulled through a hedge backwards or had an uncomfortable brush with a source of mains electricity: years of being asked by not so sweet old ladies, “where did you get that curly perm?” to which the reply is always “Nowhere. If I’d paid to look like this, I’d sue”, –  it’s a boost to know that you can literally get out of bed, step straight outside and fit in with what’s ‘cool’.’ It’s so freeing to no longer feel ‘less-than’ for the total lack of a sleek swishing pony-tail.

I really understood the connection between the hair on one’s head and inner confidence on my first outing for the BBC. Asked to present a documentary in Spain I went to my hairdresser the day before we flew out, thinking to have a trim so my hair looked like it had in my screen test. “I want to keep the length and have lots of movement, specially at the back: just need to have it out of my eyes a bit really.” She nodded. We laughed and chatted. Within fifteen short minutes I walked out, hair shorn sporting a cut best described as German Military Helmet. Its most startling feature? Total-lack-of-movement. I felt crushed and ugly and very uncertain.

These feelings simply escalated over the following ten day shoot, because although it was brilliant talking with all the interviewees where my only focus was on them and the music they made; when it was just me the sneaking fear that I was looking (therefore sounding and being) idiotic would raise it’s ugly head and laugh: particularly at my hair. Had it been possible, a mere swish of the head, curls bobbing would have stopped it in its tracks.

Still I learnt a lot.  First: ‘Get a good hairdresser’, second: don’t let your fears define you. They don’t help. Third: from today’s happy news – don’t worry if your natural look is out of step with anything that’s actually liked at all, your time will come! Finding myself accidentally in the swing of things at last, I feel better than I have for ages.  So (besides the clinical trial I actually happen to be on), here’s my contribution to medical science: –  Cool haircut = confidence = health and success.  Thank you Miuccia Prada and thank you Kylie Minogue, from the bottom of my heart.
