Elizabeth Kinder – Kinder’s Spirit

Elizabeth is a regular feature writer for fRoots, the world’s leading magazine on world music – covering events in Ethiopia, Borneo, Sarajevo and Seville. She has a Masters in ethnomusicology from Goldsmiths College where she co-ordinated a public lecture series for its ground-breaking research facility, the Centre for Contemporary Music Cultures. She presented and produced programmes on world music for Channel 4 radio and has written for the national press.

Elizabeth is also a musician. She plays sax, bass and pedal steel guitar and has played on sessions for bands as diverse as Primal Scream and Belinda Carlisle; from Top Of The Pops to Radio 4. She teaches music and saxophone. Elizabeth ditched any chance of a lavish rock’n’roll lifestyle to join the horn section of West London-based no-hopers The Love Trousers, allegedly working on a follow up to their “double B-side” debut single. Elizabeth is currently working on TV documentaries looking at the transformational power of music as well as a very personal film about her life since being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2007.

Discovering that MS (a degenerative disease of the nervous system) is currently incurable, Elizabeth determined to do everything she can to stay mobile to be able to look after her young daughter Eve and continue with her active home and working life. This has taken her on a journey to the cutting edge of medical science as she became one of only sixteen people in the country to get onto a trial for a potentially ground-breaking new treatment. But leaving no stone unturned, she’s also exploring the potential of alternative medicine. Her  journalistic curiosity (fuelled by her race against time) means she’s currently keenly exploring various alternative therapies as well as the interplay between mind and body. Excitingly Elizabeth’s finding that this has implications for life well beyond the confines of disease.

She finds the discoveries she’s making and the people she meets are inspirational.

Elizabeth lives in West London with her husband, their young daughter, their puppy and until recently her  step-son, who’s now grown-up.

    Dear Elizabeth,
I enjoyed your recent documentary on flamenco. There are too few programmes on this subject on British TV. I am an avid fan and visit Sadlers Wells to see performances whenever I can. I also travelled in Andaluzia years ago attending shows in the back street bars in mid winter and so it brought back fond memories.

There are a few singers today who sing Ladino songs and merge the Sephardic Jewish songs with the Spanish flamenco. It’s a language spoken by Jews who settled in the Balkans, Turkey, Greece and Yugoslavia. Its sadly a dying language spoken by a few today , me included, but I don’t speak with anyone now. The language will live on in the music.

      Dear Joshua,

Thank you for your email. I expect you know about Yasmin Levy and Mor Karbasi who both sing in Ladino and I know Mor is very interested in keeping the language and traditions going. I hope you find someone to talk in Ladino with soon.

      Good luck!

      Elizabeth

Hi – I am watching your Flamenco programme again. My husband and I love flamenco and have seen some amazing flamenco in Cadiz in a workers club – it was awe inspiring. We also saw a performance in a club in Edinburgh, of all places, called Alba Flamenca. The group were all from Andalucia – they were absolutely wonderful – the emotion was so raw. I love Yasmin Lev. My father’s family were from Seville at the time of the Inquisition and I love Laino music – so close to gypsy music. Thank you so much for a fascinating programme. Keep fighting the MS – all strength to you.

(You’ve made me think again about music and identity, it really does seem sometimes to be in the blood…)

I too watched your BBC4 programme on Flamenco, missed it in 2013,I think its one of the best documentarys I’ve seen on the subject, you covered a lot of ground in an hour, and the camera work was extraordinary, the forge scene in slowmo was mesmerising, sadly I missed most of it but managed to catch up on iplayer, but its only on for 28 days, then its gone.

      I’ve watched it several times.
Is there a chance of a dvd coming out?

I hope you are feeling well, thank you and keep it up !

Thank you! It’s very kind of you to take the time to say so

      Best wishes

Actually, that was my response to Chandi, but thank you too! We were very lucky with the forge scene, the group we filmed are very closed but happened to be friends of an old friend of mine and he made it possible. I felt really lucky to meet all the people involved in the film – it was really a privilege. I don’t know about a DVD, but if I hear anything I’ll keep you posted.

And thanks – I am feeling well and I hope all’s good with you.

        best,

        Elizabeth

Hi Elizabeth – I missed your bbc documentary Flamenco: Gypsy Soul but watched it today. It is great, however I wonder if you considered going to Utrera, a town in Seville, for this documentary? This is one of the most, if not the most, important place in the region in regards to Flamenco. My family is from here and my sister in law is a niece of Bambino. It is disappointing you didn’t visit/consider for the doc!
